Digital Sandbox//Video Games as Art

Spatial

Digital Sandbox is an art exhibit that exclusively features video games and related media. Video games have been fenced off from the art world for most of their lifespan. This exhibit gives a glance into the incandescent frame, the shining canvas they reside in, to illustrate that video games are art.

This exhibit is placed within the Guggenheim because it is is a museum of note that is dedicated to promoting and understanding modern and contemporary arts.

The Immersive Canvas that Shines.

The central spiral form of the Guggenheim is very unique. As viewers start at the bottom of the spiral they learn about the exhibit's theme: The Incandescent Frame.

It is the frame that shines brightly and allows the confined pixels to escape and transcend reality. Viewers ascend alongside video games, they start at the bottom and follow their ascension into pieces of art.

Trapped From Reality:

Trapped from Reality focuses on why specifically video games have been confined to non-art status. It explores common reasons people consider video games to not be art and investigates whether there is merit to these arguments. It features listening stations, sculptures, murals, and art.

As an immersive experience, Trapped from Reality transforms the museum into a place that fosters conversation and aims to open the mind of the viewer.

Video Games as Art:

Video Games as Art serves a purpose that is as clear as it’s title: It shows video games as art. There need not be an explanation for an exhibit about paintings, photography, mixed media, music — the list goes on. Similarly, as video games are undeniably art they need no explanation, no justification, as to why they deserve to be within a museum.
